Since I’m staying in Germany, friends tell me I need to get a German drivers license. What must I do?” Hans: “I think you must go to the Kreisverwaltung. Since you have an American Drivers license, I think they’ll just give you one.” At the Kreisverwaltung Freddie: “I understand I need a German drivers license. Here’s my American drivers license. Can you give me a German drivers license?” Beamter: “Herr Firestone. First I need a translation of your American drivers license and two Passport Photos. You’ll also need to have your eyes examined.” Freddie: “What’s wrong with my eyes? I can see perfectly well.” Beamter: “We need a certificate from an Optometrist that he has examined your eyes and that you meet the stipulated requirements to drive without glasses or perhaps you will need glasses to drive.” (Freddie translates his drivers license, goes to a photographer for two photos (Dm 12,00), stops by an Optometrist for the eye exam (DM 10,00) and returns to the Kreisverwaltung). Freddie: “Here’s the translation, my photos and my eye exam certificate Beamter: “This is not an official translation. Your drivers license needs to be translated by a government-registered translator.” Freddie: “But there are only six words needing translation. I assure you I have properly translated these words. See here! Drivers License means “Fhrerschein,” License number means “Fhrerschein-Nr.,” Date of Birth is “Geburtstag,” Place of Birth is “Ort,” Sex is good, I mean the word is the same, and “M” (Male) is “H” for (Herr), Address is ….” Beamter: “We need an official translation!” Freddie finds a translator in the telephone directory and goes to his office. bersetzer: “Your own translation is good. I’ll just transcribe it on my letterhead and place my official stamp on it.
